A guide for foreign companies operating in Mexico
How to recover CFDIs in Mexico
If your company spends in Mexico, the CFDI is the only document that makes an expense deductible. Here's what a CFDI is, why a receipt alone won't do, and how to recover the right one from a single photo.
What is a CFDI?
A CFDI (Comprobante Fiscal Digital por Internet) is Mexico's mandatory electronic invoice: a structured XML file issued by the merchant and digitally stamped so the SAT — Mexico's tax authority — recognizes it. It travels with a human-readable PDF, but the XML is the legally binding part.
A paper receipt, a card slip, a bank statement line or an English-language invoice is not a CFDI. For a foreign company, that distinction is where deductions are quietly lost.
Why it matters
No CFDI, no deduction
In Mexico, deductibility is tied to the CFDI — not to the fact that you paid. Without a valid CFDI issued to your company's tax details, the expense is not deductible for income tax and its VAT is not creditable.
A common trap: when a receipt is invoiced without the company's Mexican tax details, the merchant issues the CFDI to the generic foreign RFC XEXX010101000 with CFDI use S01 (“no tax effect”). That invoice exists but deducts nothing — and by the time anyone notices, the merchant's invoicing window has usually closed.
How Fotofacturas recovers it
From a photo to a CFDI in three steps
Snap a photo of the receipt
Your team photographs any receipt — gas, meals, hardware, travel — in the app. No RFC lookups, no merchant portals, no forms.
We recover the CFDI from the merchant
We identify the merchant and handle the invoicing through their portal, email or phone, using your company's correct Mexican tax details and within the merchant's invoicing window.
You receive the CFDI, ready to deduct
The XML and PDF, valid with the SAT, land back in one place — typically within 24 hours — ready for your books and your spend platform.
Fotofacturas is not a PAC and does not issue invoices. The merchant issues the CFDI; we recover it and deliver the XML and PDF valid with the SAT.
